Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does salt help you float?

The Big Idea

Salt water is denser than fresh water. That means the same cup of water is heavier. Denser water pushes up harder, so floating gets easier. That is why floating is easier in the sea than in a swimming pool.

Fresh Water Has a Density

Step one: fresh water has a density. Density tells how much stuff is packed into a space. A cup of fresh water has a certain weight. A cup of water takes up the same room, but the salt in it adds extra mass.

Salt Joins the Water

Step two: salt joins the water. The salt dissolves, and the water gets more minerals in it. The same cup of water now weighs a little more. Floating is all about how heavy an object is compared with the water it pushes aside.

A Body Floats Higher

Step three: a body floats a little higher. Denser water pushes up harder on whatever is in it. So you float a bit higher in the sea than in a lake. The buoyant push of salty water is a bit stronger, so you ride higher.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at floating! In fresh water, the duck sits lower. In salty water, the duck sits higher.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Dead Sea is so salty that people can sit on it like a chair. Earth's oceans are only a little salty, but still help you float. Do not swallow ocean water to try this. Practice floating with a grown-up in a safe spot.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill two glasses with water. Stir salt into one of them. Gently lower an egg into each one. Would you float higher in a salty sea or a lake? Scientists test with experiments. Happy exploring!

Outro

Salt makes the same cup of water heavier, so it pushes up harder! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
