Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do footprints fill with water?

The Big Idea

Under wet beach sand, there is more water. When you step, your foot squeezes the grains together. That hidden water rushes into the print. That is why a footprint on the wet band of the beach fills up so fast.

The Sand Is Already Wet

Step one: the sand is already wet. Near the water line, the gaps between grains are full of water. It is like a sponge that cannot hold any more. Wet sand under your foot is a spongy mix of grains and water.

A Foot Presses Down

Step two: a foot presses down. Your weight pushes the grains closer together. That squeezes water out of the gaps and makes a hollow. When you step, the grains pack tighter, and a little water is squeezed out right away.

Hidden Water Rushes In

Step three: hidden water rushes in. Water from the wet sand nearby flows into the hollow. In moments, your footprint becomes a tiny pool. Water nearby then flows sideways into the print, because the sponge is connected.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a footprint! A footprint makes a hollow in the sand. The squeezed grains push water into it. And water rises from below to fill the print.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The shiny wet band is where this works best. Prints in dry dunes stay empty. Stay near a grown-up when you walk by the waves. Prints refill because the sand sponge is connected.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, walk on wet sand. Make a footprint and watch it closely. Then make another one up on dry sand. Where did the water in the print come from? Scientists compare dry and wet places. Happy exploring!

A footprint is a tiny well in a sand sponge! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
