Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the ocean colder than a puddle?

The Big Idea

A puddle is thin and sits in the sun. The ocean is deep, and most of its water never gets a long turn in the heat. Wind and currents also mix cold water upward. Cold, deep water is also heavier, so it likes to stay down below.

Sun Warms the Top

Step one: the sun warms the top. Sunlight heats only the top layer of the sea. Deeper down, the sunlight barely reaches. The warm sun can only reach the top few feet of the sea.

Wind Stirs the Water

Step two: wind stirs the water. Wind and currents churn the sea like a spoon in a cup. They bring cold water up from below. Most ocean water is deep, dark, and cold, close to freezing in the deepest parts.

Feel the Mix

Step three: you feel the mix. The first step in can feel like a fridge. A puddle, in contrast, heats up fast, since it is thin and has nowhere cold to hide. A puddle is shallow, so the sun warms it all the way through, and it has no cool place to hide.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at warm and cold! A puddle is thin, so it heats up fast. The deep ocean has lots of cold water.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cold water tires you out fast, so take short dips with a grown-up. If you shiver hard, get out and dry off. Most ocean water is far below the surface. Water warms up more slowly than air or sand.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a shallow pan and a deep bucket with the same water. Set both in the sun for an hour. With a grown-up, feel the water in each one. Why does a kiddie pool warm up faster than a bay? Scientists measure temperatures carefully. Happy exploring!

Outro

The ocean is a deep fridge, and a puddle is a thin pan in the sun! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
