Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some beaches have pebbles?
The Big Idea
Not every shore has the time or the waves to grind rock all the way to powder. Strong waves can carry fine sand away and leave the heavier stones behind. Nearby cliffs keep feeding in new chunks. Each pebble has a long story of bumping and rolling.
A Cliff Cracks
Step one: a cliff cracks into chunks. Rain, frost, and waves break pieces off the rock. Those chunks tumble down to the shore. Cliffs can crack because water seeps in, freezes, and pushes the rock apart.
Waves Tumble the Chunks
Step two: waves tumble the chunks. The chunks roll and bump against each other. Their sharp edges wear smooth, and they become round pebbles. Round stones are called cobbles when they are as big as your fist, and pebbles when they are smaller.
Heavier Pebbles Stay
Step three: heavier pebbles stay. Strong waves wash the fine sand away. The heavier pebbles are too weighty to move, so they stay on the beach. Sand is so light that waves lift it easily, but pebbles are heavy and tend to be left behind.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a pebble beach! The cliff keeps sending down new rock. A cobble is a bigger rounded stone. A smooth pebble has been tumbled for a long time. And the fine sand is missing, because the waves carried it off.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Pebble beaches can be slippery, so wear shoes. Stones stay on the beach. Do not throw them at animals or people. Waves sort stones by size and weight. Pebble beaches are a workshop that has not finished the job.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at a few pebbles with a grown-up. Compare their shapes. Which are the roundest? Imagine what a storm could do to them. What would years of extra grinding do? Scientists compare and measure. Happy exploring!
