Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the ocean smell like that?

The Big Idea

The sea smell is a mix. It has salt spray, rotting seaweed, and gases from tiny living things. Your nose reads all of it at once. That is why a beach in a storm can smell different from a beach on a calm day.

Plants and Animals Die

Step one: plants and animals die. Seaweed and tiny sea creatures live and die in the water. Bacteria break them down. Tiny sea plants and animals live and die by the billions, and bacteria munch on them.

Gases and Spray Rise

Step two: gases and spray rise. Breaking waves toss tiny droplets into the air. Tiny algae and bacteria also release smelly gases. One of the gases that gives the sea its smell is made by tiny algae and is called dimethyl sulfide.

Wind Carries the Mix

Step three: the wind carries the mix. The breeze blows the droplets and gases ashore. Your nose sniffs out a sea smell. When wind blows over the water, it carries those gases and droplets far inland.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at sea air! Droplets of spray carry tiny bits of the sea. A wrack pile of rotting seaweed adds smell. And the wind carries it all to your nose.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! If a beach smells like rotten eggs and looks odd, ask a grown-up before swimming. A strong smell does not mean the whole ocean is dirty. Bacteria that eat dead plants add to sea air. Storms can stir up more smell.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Next time you visit the sea, take a slow breath. Notice where the smell is strongest. Compare it on a calm day and a stormy day. What is riding in those droplets? Scientists use their senses to learn. Happy exploring!
