Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is beach sand often tiny?

The Big Idea

Waves tumble rocks for years and years. Big pieces smash and rub against each other. Slowly, they wear down into tiny grains of sand. That is why a handful of sand holds a very long story.

A Rock Breaks Off

Step one: a rock breaks off. Rain, waves, and frost crack rocks from cliffs. Chunks tumble down to the shore. Waves are strong because water is heavy, and each wave carries sand and rock like a conveyor belt.

Waves Tumble It

Step two: waves tumble it. Waves roll the chunks and bump them together. Sharp edges wear smooth and pieces get smaller. Each bump takes off a few tiny chips, and after millions of bumps, big stones become little ones.

Grains Settle Down

Step three: grains settle on the beach. After a very long time, the pieces become sand. Waves pile them up along the shore. Sand is any grain between about a sixteenth of a millimeter and 2 millimeters across.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at sizes! A cliff chunk is the biggest. A cobble is smaller and rounded. A pebble is smaller still. And a sand grain is tiny, less than 2 millimeters wide.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! One smooth grain may once have been a cliff. Some shores have pebbles or shells instead of powder. Do not hammer rocks in parks to make sand. It can take thousands of years.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, put a few pieces of chalk in a jar with water. Close the lid tight and shake for a minute. Look at the water and the pieces. Why are river stones often smooth too? Scientists test ideas by trying them out. Happy exploring!
