Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is some sand wet under the dry top?
The Big Idea
Sand is a pile of tiny grains with tiny gaps between them. Water hides in those gaps. The sun dries the top first, but below stays damp. That is why a beach can feel dry on top and cool and damp when you dig down a little.
Waves Soak the Sand
Step one: waves soak the sand. Waves and tides wet the beach. The water sinks down into the gaps between the grains. The sand is made of grains that only partly fit together, so there is lots of room for water and air.
Sun Dries the Top
Step two: the sun dries the top. Sun and wind warm the surface layer. Water there turns to vapor and floats away. The warm sun and the breeze dry only the top few inches, because they cannot reach deeper.
Lower Grains Stay Wet
Step three: the lower grains stay wet. Deeper sand stays cooler and shaded, so water lingers there. Then the next tide refills the gaps. Because the tide keeps coming back, the lower sand often stays wet all day.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a beach underneath! The dry top is warm and loose. Below it, the grains are wet. Water hides in the gaps between the grains. And the water table is where the sand is full of water.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Deep holes in sand can collapse, so keep them small. Fill your hole in before you leave. A dry-looking beach can still be a sponge. Dig only with a grown-up nearby.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a clear cup with dry sand. Pour water in slowly, and watch. Can you see the water fill the gaps? Why does the top of a beach dry first? Scientists look closely and keep records. Happy exploring!
