Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do seashells wash up?
The Big Idea
A shell is a leftover house. After the animal dies or leaves, waves carry the empty house to shore. Light, hollow shells float and roll along. One beach can collect shells from animals that lived far out at sea.
An Animal Builds a Shell
Step one: an animal builds a shell. A snail or clam grows its hard shell from minerals in seawater. The shell protects its soft body. Mollusks, such as snails, clams, and oysters, build their shells layer by layer.
Waves Pick It Up
Step two: waves pick it up. When the animal dies or moves on, the empty shell is left behind. Waves and currents carry it along. Light shells float and roll along the bottom, so currents can carry them a long way.
It Lands on the Beach
Step three: it lands on the beach. The tide drops the shell high on the sand. Storms can toss lots of shells onto a beach at once. Storms toss more of them onto the sand, which is why storm days are great for shell hunting.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at shells! An empty snail shell is a leftover house. A living animal stays in the water. The waves carry the empty shell toward the beach. And a wrack line is where the shells pile up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! If something is still inside a shell, put it back. Do not pry live animals off rocks. Storm days often bring more shells. Some beaches have rules, so ask a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find some empty shells. Sort them by shape and size. Draw your favorite one. What job did the shell do when it was a house? Scientists treat living things kindly. Happy exploring!
