Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are older layers usually lower?
The Big Idea
Look at a cliff, and you will see stripes of rock, stacked like a cake. New stuff lands on top of old stuff, so the oldest layers usually sit at the bottom. That stacking rule is a clock you can read in a cliff.
Step 1
Step 1: a layer drops. Mud, sand, or ash settles down, and makes a flat layer. This is the oldest layer, at least for now. Nothing is under it yet.
Step 2
Step 2: a newer layer covers it. Later, a new layer drops right on top. So the top layer is younger than the one underneath. It landed later, and that's the whole trick.
Step 3
Step 3: the pile thickens, and a cliff cuts it open. Year after year, layers pile up. Then a river or a road cut slices through. Now we can read the stack from the top down, like pages in a book. The cliff has cut the book open.
A Closer Look
Here is a cross-section of rock layers. The top layer is the youngest, because it landed last. The bottom layer is the oldest. But the wavy layer is a warning. A fold can scramble the stack, so scientists check.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A road cut can be a timeline standing up. Folds and faults can flip or scramble a stack, so scientists always check. Fossils in a lower layer are usually older than fossils above them. Grown-up note: stay off crumbly road cuts. Look from a safe distance.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what would a fold do to 'lower means older'? And ask: why do scientists still love the stacking rule? Try it at home: stack 4 different books or towels. Which one went down first? That one is the oldest, and it should be at the bottom.
