Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does waiting feel longer than it is?

The Big Idea

Have you ever waited for something, and it felt like forever? Clocks tick evenly, but our attention does not. A watched pot is the very same minute, wearing a louder costume. Let's find out how that works.

Step 1

Step 1: a minute starts. A minute is always 60 seconds, whether you're at school or at play. The clock ticks at the same speed every time.

Step 2

Step 2: boredom marks many ticks. When you're bored, you check the clock again and again, and your brain notices every tick. So the minute feels stretched, like a rubber band.

Step 3

Step 3: fun skips some marks, and the clock did not change. When you're busy playing, your brain skips counting the ticks. Then a whole hour can feel short. But the clock ran the same speed!

A Closer Look

Here are two kids and one clock. One child is bored and watching the clock. The other is busy with a game. It's the very same minute, but it feels different in each mind.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fun hours shrink, and boring minutes stretch, on the very same clock. Your brain marks interesting or itchy moments as more time. The wall clock is not a trick clock. It's still right. If a worried kid has a long wait, they need company, not a lecture.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask: why does a fun recess seem to vanish? And ask: what could you measure to check the feeling against the clock? Try it at home: use a timer for a 1 minute wait. Guess how long it was first, then check! Were you close?

Outro

The clock keeps steady time, and your attention makes it feel different! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
