Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE TRADE SHELLS FAR FROM THE SEA?

The Big Idea

Imagine finding a seashell high in the mountains, hundreds of miles from the sea! A shell far inland is like a postcard from the coast. Someone carried it there. People traded beautiful and useful things along long paths, and shells traveled with them.

Step 1

Number one: it is gathered at the sea. People living on the coast picked up shells along the beach. For them, shells were easy to find.

Step 2

Number two: it is shaped or strung. A tiny hole was drilled through each shell. Then the shells were strung onto a cord to make a necklace.

Step 3

Number three: it is traded. People swapped shells for other things they wanted, like stone, skins, or food. Passed along from group to group, a shell could travel a very long way!

A Closer Look

Let's follow a shell's journey. It begins at the coast. It travels along a trade path, from friend to friend. And it ends up in an inland camp, far from the sea!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists have found seashell beads at sites very far from any ocean. The type of shell can show where it came from, so one necklace can map a network. Shell beads may have shown status, or friendship between groups. Today, take only what local rules allow, and never take anything from a site.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Imagine finding a sea shell in a mountain camp. What does it prove? Why would people carry something they can't eat? Next, look at a map and trace a possible trade path. Who might have passed it along?

Outro

A tiny shell can show us how far people, and their friendships, once reached! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
