Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID BOATS MATTER?

The Big Idea

A wide river or a lake can stop a walking traveler. But not if you have a boat! A boat turns a barrier into a road. Rivers, lakes, and coasts become highways. Boats helped people carry goods, travel far, and reach new places.

Step 1

Number one: a hull is built. The hull is the body of the boat. People made hulls from hollowed logs, tree bark, or bundles of reeds. Each one had to be light enough to float.

Step 2

Number two: people and goods ride. Paddlers could carry family, food, and tools across the water. That's a lot more than one person could carry on their back!

Step 3

Number three: shores connect. With boats, people could reach islands and faraway coasts. Scientists think people crossed the sea to Australia more than 50,000 years ago!

A Closer Look

Let's look closely at a canoe. The hull holds people and cargo. The paddle pushes the water and steers. And the river is the road, from one shore to the next.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! One of the oldest boats ever found is a dugout canoe about 10,000 years old. Boats may have carried shells, stones, and goods from place to place. And ideas can ride in boats, just like people. Today, always have a grown-up and a life jacket near real water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, float different things in a tub. Try a leaf, a sponge, and a foil boat. Which ones float? Can they carry a small load? Then ask, what ideas can ride in a boat besides people? And why is a river like a road?

Outro

Boats turned water into a road, and that changed how far people could go! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
