Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY IS A MIDDEN USEFUL?
The Big Idea
What do you do with leftovers and broken things? You throw them away. People long ago did too. A pile of old trash is called a midden. To a scientist, that trash is a treasure. It's a menu, a season calendar, and a tool list that nobody meant to write!
Step 1
Number one: leftovers are tossed. After meals, people tossed out shells, bones, and broken pots. Day after day, the pile grew.
Step 2
Number two: layers build up. Each new layer of trash covered the one below. So deeper layers are usually older. Each layer is like a chapter in a book.
Step 3
Number three: scientists sample with care. Archaeologists dig slowly with small tools, and write down exactly where each item was found. Then they can read the menu: what people ate, and in which seasons.
A Closer Look
Let's look at the layers of a midden. Shells show what people ate from the sea. Bones tell us about the animals they hunted. And broken pots can help scientists guess how old a layer is.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some middens are enormous, piled up over hundreds of years. Dinner leftovers can last longer than the house that people lived in. Layers can show how what people ate changed over time. If you spot a shell heap that might be a site, tell a ranger and don't collect souvenirs.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at your kitchen trash bag for one day. Just look, don't touch! What could a stranger learn about your meals? Next, ask what trash can tell you that a pretty tool cannot. And why do layers matter in a pile?

Old trash piles help us read the past, layer by layer. Science can find treasure anywhere! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
