Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE USE OCHRE AND COLOR?

The Big Idea

Red, yellow, and brown earth can be turned into paint. Ochre is a natural earth color that is full of tiny bits of iron. Long ago, people used it to mark bodies, tools, walls, and special events. Color was a way to say something without words!

Step 1

Number one: mineral is gathered. People found colorful rocks in the ground, in shades of red, yellow, and brown. They collected the best pieces and carried them home.

Step 2

Number two: it is ground and mixed. They ground the rock into a fine powder on a flat stone. Then they stirred it with water or fat to make a paste.

Step 3

Number three: a surface is marked. People used fingers or brushes to add color to skin, tools, or rock. The red stays bright for a long, long time, even for thousands of years!

A Closer Look

Let's follow ochre from rock to paint. First, we start with an ochre lump. Then a grindstone turns it into powder. And mixed with water or fat, it becomes bright paint!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists have found ochre that people used more than 100,000 years ago. Ochre stains on old tools are clues that art and work went together. Ochre was used for cave paintings and handprints, too. Today, make art on paper, and never scrape or paint on real caves or cliffs.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, mix a little red clay or colored powder with water at a table. Paint a small shape on paper. Does it stay bright when it dries? Then ask, what can color say that a plain tool cannot? And why does red earth last so long?

Outro

Ochre shows that people have loved color for a very long time! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
