Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE DOMESTICATE DOGS?
The Big Idea
Your dog might curl up on the couch, but its ancestors were wild wolves! Long ago, some wolves that were calm near people stayed close to camps. Over many, many years, they became partners. A dog can warn of danger, help with hunting, and keep camp company.
Step 1
Number one: wild canines near camp. Scientists think some wolves came close to human camps, looking for leftover food. The calmer ones were less afraid.
Step 2
Number two: calmer ones stay. Wolves that stayed calm around people raised pups that were also calm. Over many generations, those animals grew even more friendly.
Step 3
Number three: jobs are shared. Dogs could bark to warn of visitors and help find animals. People shared food and shelter, and dogs became part of the family.
A Closer Look
Let's look at life in an old camp. The camp is home for the family. The dog might give a warning bark if a stranger comes near. And people and dogs share the work. Everybody helps!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Scientists think dogs may be the first animals that people kept as partners. That partnership began at least 15,000 years ago, maybe even earlier. Archaeologists find old dog bones near ancient camps and homes. Today, adopt from a shelter, and never take a wild pup.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Watch a friendly dog from a distance, or look at photos of dogs. What jobs could a dog do that a stone tool cannot? Next, ask why being calm matters. Why would calm animals be easier to live with?
