Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE GROW GRAIN?

The Big Idea

Wheat, rice, corn, and oats are all kinds of grain. They're really the seeds of grass plants. Grain can be dried and stored for a long time. A jar of seed is a plan for winter! That's a big reason people started growing it.

Step 1

Number one: wild heads are gathered. First, people gathered seeds from wild grasses. The seed heads grow at the top of each stalk.

Step 2

Number two: the best seeds are saved. People kept seeds from the best plants, like the ones with big heads. Then they planted them in a field, and the field became a pantry.

Step 3

Number three: the harvest is dried. Dry grain doesn't spoil easily, so it can be stored in jars and baskets. That grain can feed a family all winter!

A Closer Look

Let's follow the journey of grain. It starts as a seed head on a plant. Then the seeds are dried and gathered. And finally they go into a store jar, ready for winter!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bread, porridge, and noodles all start with grain. Drying matters, because wet grain can spoil or grow mold. Growing grain takes water, work, and a little luck with the weather. Grain in a grocery store still follows this chain. Try not to waste it!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at some dry rice or oats, and some that have been left in water. Which one could you store for months? Next, ask why drying matters. And what risk stays even after a good harvest?

Outro

Grain turned summer harvests into winter meals, and that was a very clever plan! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
