Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID FARMING CHANGE EVERYTHING?

The Big Idea

Imagine if your food grew right outside your door. About 10,000 years ago, people in different parts of the world learned to grow food on purpose. That can feed more people in one place, and it frees some people to do other jobs. That's why farming changed everything!

Step 1

Number one: seeds are saved. Early farmers kept seeds from the best plants. Then they planted those seeds in the next season.

Step 2

Number two: a field is tended. Plants need water and care, and fields need guarding from hungry animals. Farming is hard work, and a bad year can mean less food.

Step 3

Number three: the harvest is stored. After harvest, people stored grain in baskets and jars. Extra food meant more people could stay, and some could try new jobs, like making pottery.

A Closer Look

Let's look at an early farm. A seed grows into a plant. Rows of plants fill the field. And a store jar keeps the harvest safe, so a village can stay nearby.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some of the first crops were wheat, barley, and peas. Pottery, towns, and calendars grew up around fields. Farmers had to watch the seasons closely to know when to plant. Even a grocery tomato starts as a farm idea, so thank the growers!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, plant a bean seed in a cup of soil. Give it water and sunlight, and watch it grow. Then ask, what new job could exist once extra food is stored? And what risk does a field add?
