Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is amber a special kind of time capsule?

The Big Idea

Amber starts out as sticky tree sap, called resin. If a bug or a bit of plant gets stuck in the resin, and it hardens over a very long time, it can become amber. That gives us a 3-D snapshot of a tiny moment.

Resin Drips

Step one: sticky resin drips. Some trees ooze thick, sticky resin, especially when they are hurt. A tiny bug can get stuck, like on flypaper. It happens in a moment.

Resin Hardens

Step two: the resin hardens. The resin covers the bug and seals out air and germs. That keeps tiny things, like hairs and wings, from rotting. Sometimes even little bubbles are trapped. Those can hold clues about the air.

Time Makes Amber

Step three: time turns it into amber. Buried under the ground for millions of years, the resin slowly turns into amber. Then someone finds it, and can look inside. It is like opening a tiny window into the past.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at amber! It starts on a tree. Sticky resin drips down. An insect can get trapped inside. And in time, the resin hardens into amber.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Most bugs in amber are tiny. Giant movie mosquitoes are pure fiction. Do not crack amber to free the bug. Fake amber with plastic bugs exists, and museums test it. Real scientific amber stays in museum collections.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! What does amber save that a flat leaf print cannot? Why is a trapped bug still not a dinosaur clone kit? How could bubbles inside amber be a clue? Look at a drop of sticky tree sap outside, from a distance, and draw what you see.

Outro

Amber keeps a tiny moment safe for millions of years. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
