Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we find fossils of leaves and wood too?

The Big Idea

Animals are not the only things that become fossils. Plants do too! A leaf can press its veins into mud, and a log can turn to stone. Plant fossils tell us what the old world looked like.

Leaf Falls

Step one: a leaf falls in mud. A leaf lands in soft, quiet mud. Its veins press into the mud, like a stamp. Later, the mud turns to rock, and the print stays. Even tiny veins can be seen.

Wood Turns Stony

Step two: wood soaks up minerals. A buried log can soak up water with minerals. Bit by bit, the wood is replaced by stone. This is called petrified wood, and it can still show the tree rings. You can count the years the tree lived.

Read the Habitat

Step three: read the habitat. The shape of a fossil leaf can hint at the weather, like warm and wet, or cool and dry. Plant fossils also show what food was growing where dinosaurs lived. It is like a picture of the grocery store.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at plant fossils! Leaf veins are stamped in the rock. Stone wood keeps its tree rings. Scientists ask, was it a swamp? Or was it a forest?

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Petrified wood is rock. It is not firewood. Do not pocket park wood or leaf plates. Plant clues help date the animal clues nearby. A gift-shop stone should say where it was collected.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! What can a leaf fossil tell you that a tooth cannot? Why do the veins matter? If you find stone wood and a long-neck bone together, what idea gets stronger? Find a leaf outside, and look at its veins with a magnifying glass.

Outro

A leaf print or a stone log helps us picture a whole ancient world. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
