Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are fossils usually found in rock layers?
The Big Idea
Sand, mud, and ash settle in layers, like pages in a book. Older pages usually sit lower down, and new pages pile on top. An animal buried in one layer stays in that chapter of time.
Mud Settles
Step one: a new layer settles. Rivers and seas drop sand and mud. Each new layer settles on top of the older ones. Think of each layer as a page in a book.
Animal Is Buried
Step two: an animal gets buried. If a body is covered by mud, its bones can stay in that layer. The bone is now a clue about that page of time.
Layers Turn to Rock
Step three: the layers harden into rock. More layers pile on top, and the weight presses down. Over a very long time, the loose sand and mud turn to rock. The fossil is locked in its layer.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the stack! The layer at the top is the youngest. This fossil sits in place, in its layer. The layer at the bottom is the oldest. A canyon wall shows the layers like a timeline.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Lower is older is the first rule, but not the only rule. Layers can be folded or broken by moving ground, so scientists check the whole stack. A road cut can show layers, just like a famous canyon. Never climb crumbly cliffs. Stay behind the fences.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! If two fossils are in different layers, which one is probably older? What could scramble the page order? Why is the layer part of the clue, not just the bone? Stack colored paper or clay layers, then hide a toy bone inside.
Outro
Every layer of rock is a page in Earth's very old book. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
