Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we use brushes instead of shovels at a dig?

The Big Idea

Fossils can be as fragile as a dry cookie. A shovel would be like a wrecking ball, and could smash the bone. So diggers use small brushes and picks to remove the dirt one crumb at a time. It can take hours to uncover a single bone!

Mark the Grid

Step one: mark the grid. First, diggers lay out a grid with string, so every square has a name. Later, this shows exactly where each find came from. That way, nothing gets lost or mixed up.

Brush the Bone

Step two: brush near the bone. Far from the bone, diggers can use bigger tools. But near the fossil, only soft brushes and tiny picks are used. The last inches are the slowest. Patience is a digger's best skill.

Bag and Map

Step three: bag the dirt, and map the find. Loose dirt goes into bags, since it may hold tiny teeth, seeds, or scales. Diggers draw a map, because the place a fossil is found is part of the story. A fossil without its place is like a clue with the page number torn out.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the tools! A soft brush sweeps dust away. A small pick loosens hard dirt. A dirt bag keeps tiny clues safe. And the fossil bone waits for us, safely.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Backyard shovels and fossils do not mix. One hard poke can erase an edge that took a million years to form. Photos are taken before anything moves. Want to try a brush? Join a museum's public dig with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! What clue would a shovel destroy first? Why do we bag the dirt instead of dumping it? Why does the grid matter as much as the bone? Try brushing sand off a toy, using a soft paintbrush.

Outro

Patience and a soft brush help us learn what happened long ago. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
