Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Grab your explorer hat! Why do plants need sunlight?

The Big Idea

Sunlight is a plant's power source. Without it, chlorophyll cannot make sugar, and the plant slowly runs out of food. So plants lean toward the light! That is why a sunny spot is the best place for most plants.

Rays Arrive

Step one: the sun's rays arrive. Sunlight hits the leaf, bringing energy from 150 million kilometers away. Every leaf is like a tiny solar panel, ready to catch it.

The Green Tool Wakes

Step two: chlorophyll wakes up. Chlorophyll catches the light energy, and that starts a food recipe inside the leaf. The recipe needs light energy, water from the roots, and air.

Food Travels

Step three: food is made and shared. Sugar is made inside the leaf, and then it moves to stems and roots. That recipe is called photosynthesis, and it lets new leaves and roots grow. Plants are the start of most food chains, so this recipe helps almost every living thing.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at photosynthesis! The sun brings the energy. Water climbs up from the roots. The leaf is the kitchen where the food is made. Air gives the leaf a gas called carbon dioxide. The result is sugar, the plant's food. Plants are quite the little chefs.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A week in a dark closet can turn a plant pale and weak. Too little light means long, skinny stems reaching for a window. Most plants make their food during the day, and rest at night. Safety first: never stare at the sun. Look at the plants instead.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, put one plant cutting in a bright window. Put the other in a dim corner. Which stem stays sturdy? What was missing in the corner?

Outro

Now you know! Plants turn sunshine into food, and that feeds the whole forest. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
