What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do seeds travel?

The Big Idea

A seed that falls only at its parent's feet must compete with the big plant for light and water. Traveling gives the baby plant a new patch of soil. So seeds have clever ways to go places!

The Seed Is Ready

Step one: the seed is ready. The parent plant packs a baby plant and a little lunch inside each seed. Now the seed just needs a way to get away from the shade.

A Ticket Is Attached

Step two: the seed gets a travel ticket. Some seeds grow a wing, some have fluff, and some have hooks. Other seeds hide inside juicy fruit, and wind, water, or an animal gives them a ride.

New Ground

Step three: the seed lands on new ground. It settles far from the parent, in a fresh patch of soil. If soil and water are right, a new plant begins to sprout.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at traveling seeds! A maple wing spins like a tiny helicopter, so the wind carries it farther. Dandelion fluff works like a parachute that floats on the breeze. A burr has tiny hooks that grab onto fur or socks. A berry is a tasty snack, and the seeds travel inside the animal that eats it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Coconuts can float on the sea for months. Some pinecones open after a fire and toss seeds onto bare ground. Your socks can be an accidental seed taxi. Safety first: do not eat wild berries unless a grown-up knows they are safe.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, drop a maple seed from up high. Then drop a plain pebble from the same height. Which one drifted farther? What did the wing do?

Outro

Now you know! Seeds travel to find room to grow. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
