Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's explore the wild together. Why do roots grow down?
The Big Idea
Roots grow down because they follow gravity. Down is where soil holds moisture, and where a plant can anchor itself. So wind does not tip it over! Even a tiny seedling knows which way to grow, without any eyes at all.
A Seed Wakes Up
Step one: a seed wakes up. Water soaks into the seed, and a tiny root tip pushes out. That little tip is the first explorer of the underground world.
Gravity Is Felt
Step two: the root feels gravity. Special cells in the root tip can tell which way is down. So the root bends toward the ground, instead of waving in the air. Its sensing is so good that if you flip the pot, the roots curve back down.
Water Is Found
Step three: the root finds water. Tiny root hairs grow out and start to drink. Meanwhile, the anchor holds the stem up, so the plant stands strong.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a root! The stem is the part that grows up above the ground. Root hairs are tiny drinking straws. The main root is the big anchor that grows down. The soil holds the water and minerals the plant needs. The root tip is the part that feels which way is down.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Root hairs are the real drinking straws. Some taproots go deeper than the plant is tall. A plant tipped on its side still curves its roots down again. Safety first: digging plants out of a yard needs a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, sprout a bean on a wet paper towel in a clear cup. Which way did the first root go? Now tip the cup onto its side. What happened to the root?
Outro
Now you know! Roots follow gravity to find water and stay anchored. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
