How can horses sleep standing up?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can horses sleep standing up?

The Big Idea

Horses can nap standing up! Without falling over! How?

Locking System

Step one: Locking System. Horses have a special system of tendons and ligaments in their legs that lets them lock their joints in place. This means a horse can doze while standing without falling over.

Ready to Run

Step two: Ready to Run. A horse can rest in the field and still run away quickly if needed. That's useful for an animal that might be chased.

Deep Sleep

Step three: Deep Sleep. For deep sleep, a horse lies down for short periods. Locked legs give a horse a safe way to nap.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Joints. Stay straight. Ready. Deep sleep.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A horse rests standing but must lie down for its deepest sleep. Horse legs lock in place. Ready to run. Dozing while standing.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stand near a wall for support. Stand on one leg with your other foot resting on your ankle. Notice how you balance. It's like a horse resting one back leg. Switch legs.
