Book 33, Question 91 · Video

Why do giraffes and camels move both legs on the same side together?

Video · 1:50 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 33

Most four-legged animals move their legs in diagonal pairs when they walk. Camels and giraffes do something different: they pace, moving the two legs on the same side at the same time. Their legs are long, and pacing may keep their legs from bumping each other. It makes them sway side to side as they stride. Different bodies, different steps.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do giraffes and camels move both legs on the same side together?

The Big Idea

Giraffes and camels walk in a funny way! Both legs on one side move together. Why?

Diagonal Walkers

Step one: Diagonal Walkers. Most four-legged animals move their legs in diagonal pairs when they walk. A front leg on one side moves with a back leg on the other.

Pacers

Step two: Pacers. Camels and giraffes do something different: they pace, moving the two legs on the same side at the same time. Their legs are long, and pacing may keep their legs from bumping each other.

Swaying Stride

Step three: Swaying Stride. Pacing makes them sway side to side as they stride. Different bodies need different steps.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Most animals. Pacers. No bumping. Side to side.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some dogs and horses pace too. Giraffes pace naturally. Camels sway as they walk. Long legs avoid bumping.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Walk across the room moving your left arm and left leg together. Then move your right arm and right leg together. Keep going slowly. How does it feel? Now walk normally and compare.

Outro

Most four-legged animals walk with diagonal leg pairs, but camels and giraffes pace, moving both legs on the same side together. With such long legs, pacing may stop them bumping, and it makes them sway. Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
