Book 33, Question 90 · Video
How do horses move at different speeds?
Horses move in four main ways, called gaits. A walk is slow and has four beats. A trot is faster, with diagonal legs moving together. A canter has three beats, and a gallop is the fastest, with four beats and a moment when all four feet are off the ground. Switching gaits helps a horse save energy. Each gait has its own rhythm.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do horses move at different speeds?
The Big Idea
Horses walk, trot, canter, and gallop! Each speed has a rhythm. How do they switch?
Walk and Trot
Step one: Walk and Trot. Horses move in four main ways, called gaits. A walk is slow with four beats, and a trot is faster, with diagonal legs moving together.
Canter and Gallop
Step two: Canter and Gallop. A canter has three beats. A gallop is the fastest, with four beats and a moment when all four feet are off the ground.
Saving Energy
Step three: Saving Energy. Switching gaits helps a horse save energy at different speeds. Each gait has its own rhythm.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Four beats. Two beats. Three beats. Fastest.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A galloping horse has all four hooves in the air for a moment. Trots have two beats. Canters have three beats. Gaits save energy.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Clap a four-beat walk rhythm. Clap a two-beat trot. Clap a galloping beat. Then gallop around the yard like a horse. Which rhythm is fastest?
Outro
Horses have four main gaits: a slow four-beat walk, a two-beat trot, a three-beat canter, and a fast gallop with all hooves briefly in the air. Switching gaits helps a horse save energy. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
