Book 33, Question 90
How do horses move at different speeds?
Horses move in four main ways, called gaits.
A walk is slow and has four beats. A trot is faster, with diagonal legs moving together. A canter has three beats, and a gallop is the fastest, with four beats and a moment when all four feet are off the ground. Switching gaits helps a horse save energy. Each gait has its own rhythm.
