Book 33, Question 30 · Video
Why are some baby mammals born blind and hairless?
Baby mice, rabbits, kittens, and puppies are born with their eyes closed and with little or no fur. They cannot see or walk and depend on their mothers for warmth and milk. Being born early in their growth lets the mother have many babies at a time, and they grow quickly in the safety of a nest or den. After a few weeks, their eyes open and they are on their way.

The Big Idea
Kittens and puppies are born with eyes closed! And hardly any fur. Why?
Closed Eyes
Step one: Closed Eyes. Baby mice, rabbits, kittens, and puppies are born with their eyes closed and little or no fur. They can't see or walk and depend on their mothers for warmth and milk.
Many Babies
Step two: Many Babies. Being born early in their growth lets the mother have many babies at a time. They grow quickly in the safety of a nest or den.
Eyes Open
Step three: Eyes Open. After a few weeks, their eyes open and they're on their way. Soon they're wobbling, exploring, and playing with their brothers and sisters.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Closed. Little. Safe place. Then open.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Newborn kittens' eyes open after about a week or two. Nests keep them safe. Many babies come at once. They grow quickly.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a nest from a shoebox and soft fabric. Place a toy baby inside. Think about what a baby needs. Write warmth, food, and safety. How does your nest give each one?
