Why can a baby giraffe stand soon after birth while a baby mouse cannot?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a baby giraffe stand soon after birth while a baby mouse cannot?

The Big Idea

A baby giraffe stands within an hour! A baby mouse can't walk for days. Why the difference?

Born Ready

Step one: Born Ready. Some mammals, like giraffes, horses, and deer, are born with open eyes and strong legs. A giraffe calf can stand in about an hour, because it must keep up with its herd.

Born Tiny

Step two: Born Tiny. A baby mouse is born tiny, pink, and hairless. It stays safe in a nest while its mother brings milk.

Both Work

Step three: Both Work. Both plans work. They're different ways to start life, matched to how each animal lives and stays safe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Stands fast. Walks soon. Hides. In a nest.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A baby giraffe is about six feet tall at birth. Giraffe calves stand in about an hour. Baby mice stay in nests. Both plans work.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a day-old foal. Draw a day-old mouse. Show which one is ready to walk. Show which one is snuggled in a nest. Label each one.
