How can you spot a lizard’s ear holes?

Video · 1:46 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 32

A lizard’s ears are small holes on the sides of its head, just behind the eyes. In many lizards you can see a round eardrum like a tiny drum skin. In some lizards the ear is smaller or tucked under skin. This lets lizards hear sounds in the air. Snakes don’t have these ear holes, which is a good clue for telling them apart.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can you spot a lizard’s ear holes?

The Big Idea

Lizards have ears! But they're easy to miss. How can you spot a lizard's ear holes?

Behind the Eyes

Step one: Behind the Eyes. A lizard's ears are small holes on the sides of its head, just behind the eyes. You may need to look closely to find them.

Tiny Drums

Step two: Tiny Drums. In many lizards you can see a round eardrum like a tiny drum skin. In some lizards, the ear is smaller or tucked under skin.

A Telling Clue

Step three: A Telling Clue. This lets lizards hear sounds in the air. Snakes don't have these ear holes, which is a good clue for telling them apart.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Behind eyes. Like drums. From the air. Have none.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A lizard's eardrum catches sound like yours does. Snakes lack ear holes. Ears sit behind the eyes. Ear holes are a clue to tell lizards and snakes apart.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at photos of a lizard's head. Find the ear spot. Draw a lizard. Circle its ear. Then draw a snake and look for an ear. Any there?

Outro

A lizard's ears are small holes behind its eyes, often with a round eardrum like a tiny drum. They let lizards hear sounds in the air, and since snakes don't have them, ear holes help tell the two apart. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
