The Big Idea

Crocodiles usually crawl. But some can gallop like a dog! Can a crocodile really gallop?

Walks and Bursts

Step one: Walks and Bursts. Most crocodiles walk or run in short bursts. They do a high walk with their belly off the ground.

Gallopers

Step two: Gallopers. A few kinds, including the freshwater crocodile of Australia, can actually gallop. They bound with their legs and body, a bit like a dog.

Short Distances

Step three: Short Distances. They gallop only for short distances to reach water quickly. Galloping crocs can be surprisingly speedy, which is another reason to keep far away from them in the wild.
