The Big Idea

Crocodiles have extra ribs in a surprising place! They're in the belly. Why?

Belly Rods

Step one: Belly Rods. Besides the ribs around their chest, crocodiles have thin, bony rods in the skin of the belly. They're called gastralia, and they aren't attached to the backbone.

Support and Protect

Step two: Support and Protect. These belly ribs help support and protect the soft belly. They may also help with breathing.

Ancient Bones

Step three: Ancient Bones. Tuataras have belly ribs too. Scientists find belly ribs in fossils of many ancient animals, including some dinosaurs.
