Book 32, Question 24 · Video
How do bones tell scientists how old a reptile was?
Bones grow a little each year, and the growth slows in cold or dry seasons. Scientists can slice a tiny piece of bone, such as one from a toe or limb, and see thin lines where growth paused. Counting the lines gives a good guess of the animal’s age. It works much like counting tree rings. This helps researchers learn how long reptiles live.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do bones tell scientists how old a reptile was?
The Big Idea
How can you tell how old a reptile is? The answer is in its bones! Let's find out how.
Yearly Growth
Step one: Yearly Growth. Bones grow a little each year. The growth slows in cold or dry seasons.
Tiny Slices
Step two: Tiny Slices. Scientists can slice a tiny piece of bone, like one from a toe or limb. They see thin lines where growth paused.
Counting Lines
Step three: Counting Lines. Counting the lines gives a good guess of the animal's age. It works much like counting tree rings, and it helps researchers learn how long reptiles live.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Grows yearly. Slow growth. Studied closely. Counted.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Fossil bones can show growth lines too. It's like counting tree rings. Tiny bone slices tell big stories. Growth lines mark years.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at a photo of a tree stump. Count the rings. Write how many years the tree might have lived. Write one reason rings can be uneven. Bone lines work in a similar way.
Outro
Reptile bones grow a little each year and slow down in cold or dry seasons, leaving thin lines. Scientists slice a tiny piece of bone and count the lines, like tree rings, to estimate age.
