Book 32, Question 23

Why do crocodiles have belly ribs?

Besides the ribs around their chest, crocodiles have thin, bony rods in the skin of the belly called gastralia.

They are not attached to the backbone. These belly ribs help support and protect the soft belly and may help with breathing. Tuataras have them too. Scientists find belly ribs in fossils of many ancient animals.
