How can an app tell which bird is singing?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can an app tell which bird is singing?

The Big Idea

Some phone apps can name a singing bird! It feels like magic. How does it work?

Sound to Picture

Step one: Sound to Picture. A sound-ID app listens to the song. It turns the sound into a spectrogram, a picture of the sound.

Comparing

Step two: Comparing. A computer program compares that picture to thousands of sound pictures it has seen before. If it finds a close match, it suggests a bird's name.

Double-Check

Step three: Double-Check. It works best when the recording is clear and there isn't too much noise. It's a helper tool, so double-check with your own eyes and ears.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Recorded. Picture made. Name suggested. Double-check.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The computer program learned from people who labeled many recordings. Apps work best in quiet places. Apps look for matching sound pictures. Always double-check the app's guess.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to try a free bird-sound app with you. Go to a yard or park. Let the app listen to a bird. Compare its guess with the bird you see. Was it right?

Outro

A bird-sound app turns a song into a spectrogram and compares it to thousands of labeled sound pictures. If it finds a close match, it suggests a name, but it's a helper, so check with your own eyes and ears. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring!
