Why are some birds noisy after dark?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some birds noisy after dark?

The Big Idea

Most birds sing in the daytime. But some get noisy after dark! Why is that?

Night Singers

Step one: Night Singers. Some birds, such as nightingales, mockingbirds, and owls, sing at night. They have the stage almost to themselves.

Quieter Nights

Step two: Quieter Nights. At night there's less noise from daytime birds and traffic. So a song can be heard farther. Bright city lights can also trick birds into singing.

Flight Calls

Step three: Flight Calls. Many migrating birds call to each other as they fly overhead in the dark. They use short flight calls to stay together.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Sings at night. Hoots. Trick birds. Flight calls.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! You can sometimes hear flight calls on quiet, clear nights during migration season. Nights are quieter for singing. City lights can trick birds into singing. Many migrating birds fly at night.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, open a window on a calm evening. Listen quietly for night sounds. Write down each sound you hear. Sort them into birds, insects, or machines. Which group was biggest?
