Why do some ducks sleep with one eye open?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some ducks sleep with one eye open?

The Big Idea

Ducks have a clever sleeping trick. They can keep one eye open! How do they do it?

Half a Brain

Step one: Half a Brain. A duck can rest half of its brain at a time. When it sleeps, one eye may stay open.

The Watchful Eye

Step two: The Watchful Eye. The half of the brain connected to the open eye stays awake. It keeps watch for danger while the other half rests.

Edge of the Group

Step three: Edge of the Group. Ducks at the edge of a sleeping group often keep the outward eye open. Ducks in the middle can close both eyes. It is a clever way to rest safely.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Rests at once. Stays awake. Watch outward. Close both eyes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists call half-brain sleep unihemispheric sleep. Dolphins can rest half their brain too. The open eye faces out from the group. The middle of the group is the safest spot.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch a group of resting ducks at a park, from a distance. Don't go near the water's edge without a grown-up. Count how many look asleep. Look for ducks with one eye open. Are they on the outside of the group?

Outro

A duck can rest half its brain at a time, keeping one eye open to watch for danger. Ducks on the edge of a sleeping group keep their outward eye open, while ducks in the middle can close both.
