What is a crop, the bird’s built-in lunch bag?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a crop, the bird’s built-in lunch bag?

The Big Idea

Birds have a lunch bag built right in! It's tucked inside the throat. What is a crop?

A Stretchy Pouch

Step one: A Stretchy Pouch. A crop is a stretchy pouch at the bottom of a bird's throat. A bird can swallow food quickly and store it there.

Eat Fast, Digest Later

Step two: Eat Fast, Digest Later. Food in the crop can be digested slowly later, when it's safe. That lets a bird gather seeds in a hurry and then hide in a quiet spot to finish eating.

Crop Milk

Step three: Crop Milk. Pigeons even make a special milk in the crop to feed their chicks. It is thick and full of nutrients for fast-growing babies.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Stretchy. Swallow quickly. Digest later. For chicks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Both pigeon parents make crop milk for their babies. The crop stores food for later. Seed eaters can fill up fast. Birds can finish eating later in safety.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a bird's food path as a simple map. Beak, throat, crop, stomach, gizzard. Connect them with arrows. Label what each part does in a short phrase. Which part is the lunch bag?
