Book 30, Question 87 · Video
What is hard water?
Hard water has lots of dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. These come from rocks that water flows through. Hard water is safe to drink, but it makes soap harder to lather and leaves white crusty limescale on faucets and inside kettles. In places with soft water, soap suds up easily. Areas with limestone often have harder water than areas with granite.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is hard water?
The Big Idea
Some water is called hard! But water is wet, not hard. What does it mean?
Dissolved Minerals
Step one: Dissolved Minerals. Hard water has lots of dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. These come from the rocks that water flows through, slowly dissolving a little bit at a time.
Signs
Step two: Signs. Hard water is safe to drink, but it makes soap harder to lather. It leaves white, crusty limescale on faucets and inside kettles.
Soft Water
Step three: Soft Water. In places with soft water, soap suds up easily. Areas with limestone often have harder water than areas with granite.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Dissolved. Less lather. White crust. Crusty inside.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Soap scum and chalky spots are signs of hard water. Limestone makes it harder. Safe to drink. Soft water suds up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a faucet or shower head. Search for white crust. Check inside a kettle too. Draw what you find. Ask what could be done.
