Book 30, Question 88 · Video
How does a water softener work?
A water softener has a tank full of tiny resin beads that attract calcium and magnesium. As hard water flows through, those minerals stick to the beads, and the beads release sodium in exchange. Over time the beads fill up, so the machine flushes them with salty water to recharge. The water that leaves is softer, and soap lathers better.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a water softener work?
The Big Idea
A water softener makes hard water soft! It's like a mineral trap. How does it work?
Resin Beads
Step one: Resin Beads. A water softener has a tank full of tiny resin beads. The beads attract calcium and magnesium as water flows past.
The Swap
Step two: The Swap. As hard water flows through, the minerals stick to the beads. In exchange, the beads release sodium into the water.
Recharging
Step three: Recharging. Over time the beads fill up, so the machine flushes them with salty water to recharge. The water that leaves is softer, and soap lathers better.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Trap minerals. Stick on. Swapped in. Salty flush.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The swap of minerals for sodium is called ion exchange. Beads attract minerals. Salt recharges beads. Soap lathers better.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Mix big and small beads in a bowl. Pour them through a kitchen strainer. See which get caught. See which pass through. How is this like catching minerals?
