Book 30, Question 50 · Video
How does a lake change from January to July?
In January, ice covers many northern lakes, the water is cold and still, and animals move slowly. By April, the ice melts and the lake turns over. In June, the surface warms, plants and algae grow, and fish spawn. In July, the lake is layered and busy with insects, birds, and swimmers. Then fall begins the cycle again.

Spring and Summer
Step two: Spring and Summer. By April, the ice melts and the lake turns over, mixing from top to bottom. In June, the surface warms, plants and algae grow, and fish spawn.
July and Beyond
Step three: July and Beyond. In July, the lake is layered and busy with insects, birds, and swimmers. Then fall begins the cycle again.

Let's take a closer look! Ice and rest. Turnover. Layers and life. Cooling.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Many northern Ontario lakes are frozen for four or five months. Spring turnover mixes water. Fish spawn in June. Fall starts the cycle.
