Book 30, Question 49 · Video
Do pond plants still make oxygen under the ice?
Under clear ice with little snow, sunlight still shines through, and plants and algae make a little oxygen by photosynthesis. When snow blocks the light, they make less, while animals and decaying matter keep using oxygen. In small, shallow ponds, oxygen can get low in a long winter. Big lakes have more oxygen, and open water near streams help.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Do pond plants still make oxygen under the ice?
The Big Idea
Plants under pond ice can still make oxygen! But only sometimes. How does it work?
Clear Ice
Step one: Clear Ice. Under clear ice with little snow, sunlight still shines through. Plants and algae make a little oxygen by photosynthesis.
Snow Blocks
Step two: Snow Blocks. When snow blocks the light, plants and algae make less oxygen. Meanwhile, animals and decaying matter keep using oxygen.
Running Low
Step three: Running Low. In small, shallow ponds, oxygen can get low during a long winter. Big lakes have more oxygen, and open water near streams helps too.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Gets through. Blocks light. Made by plants. Use it up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Scientists sometimes cut holes in the ice to measure oxygen. Clear ice lets light in. Snow blocks light. Small ponds run low.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put a small plant in water in two jars. Put one jar in the light. Put the other in a dark closet. Compare them after a week. Which plant looks healthier?
Outro
Under clear ice, sunlight lets plants and algae make a little oxygen, but snow blocks the light so they make less while animals keep using it. In small ponds, oxygen can run low in a long winter, while big lakes have more. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me!
