Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does paint dry?

The Big Idea

Wet paint is bits of color floating in a liquid. Drying means that liquid leaves or changes. Then the color bits lock together into a thin, solid film! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the liquid escapes! Water-based paint loses water into the air. Heat and moving air make that happen faster. That's why a thin coat dries so fast.

Step 2

Step two: the bits crowd! As the liquid leaves, the tiny color particles move closer and closer together. Like people squeezing together in a crowd.

Step 3

Step three: the film forms! Some paints harden when their molecules link together. Either way, the leftover stuff becomes a skin, and the coat feels dry! But wait for it to set before you add a second coat, or it can wrinkle! Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.

A Closer Look

Let's look at paint as it dries! The wet layer is still liquid. Water evaporates up into the air. And the pigment bits are left behind as a dry film. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Thick blobs dry last, because the liquid has a longer trip out. Damp air slows down paint that has water in it. Open a window. Fresh air carries the vapor away. Use paints and solvents with a grown-up, and never taste them. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Paint two paper scraps, and leave one in still air and one near a fan, with a grown-up nearby. Which film sets first? What did the moving air steal? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.

Outro

When the liquid leaves, the paint is dry! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
