Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do carpenters use squares?
The Big Idea
A square is a frozen right angle. It checks that two edges meet at 90 degrees. So walls stand straight, and frames don't lean over into slanted shapes! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: hook the edge! One arm of the square rides along the side of the board. That keeps the whole line straight.
Step 2
Step two: the pencil marks! The other arm crosses the face of the board, and a pencil line follows it. Straight lines are what make a good cut.
Step 3
Step three: the gap tells! You can also test a finished corner. If light shows under the tool, the corner isn't a perfect 90 degrees. Carpenters call that keeping things true. Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.
A Closer Look
Let's look at a carpenter's square! The body is the thick, short arm. The tongue is the long, thin arm. And the corner where they meet is exactly 90 degrees. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The 3-4-5 triangle trick also proves a big corner is square. A bent square lies, so treat it gently. A speed square also helps mark 45-degree cuts for roofs. Use saws and squares with a grown-up. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Trace a book corner, and then a cereal-box corner, and test both with a square, with a grown-up. Which corner is closer to 90 degrees? What would a tilted wall do to a door? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.
