Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do zippers zip?

The Big Idea

A zipper is two toothy rails and a little slider. The slider is a Y-shaped tunnel. It meshes the teeth together on the way up, and unmeshes them on the way down! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the slider climbs! When you pull the slider up, the Y-shaped tunnel squeezes the two rails together. That's why a zipper needs the slider to work.

Step 2

Step two: the teeth mesh! Each tooth is a tiny hook. The slider forces the left hooks into the right gaps, like fingers laced together. It's a lot like two hands clasping fingers.

Step 3

Step three: the chain holds! Now the teeth make one strong line that resists a pull. When the slider drops back down, the tunnel spits the teeth apart again. Tents, pencil cases, and suitcases use the same trick! Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.

A Closer Look

Let's look at a zipper up close! The slider has a pull tab you can grab. The teeth are the tiny hooks. The tape holds the teeth, and the stop keeps the slider on. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Metal zippers clack, and coil zippers use a spiral of nylon. A missing tooth near the bottom can make the whole zipper fail. Fabric caught in the slider is the usual jam. If a zipper sticks, wiggle the slider back a little, and never force it against skin. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look closely at an open jacket zipper, with a grown-up. Are the teeth hooks or bumps? What job does the slider's Y shape do? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!

Outro

A tiny slider locks a whole row of teeth! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
