Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a potter's wheel spin?
The Big Idea
A spinning wheel turns lumps of clay into even walls. Every side of the pot meets your hands at the same speed. So the shape stays round! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: the clay is centered! A lump of clay sits in the middle of the wheel head. Off-center clay wobbles, so centering comes first. Potters call that first step centering.
Step 2
Step two: your hands press in! The wheel carries the clay around, while your hands guide it inward. A little water helps the clay slide instead of tearing. Gentle, even pressure is the secret.
Step 3
Step three: the walls rise! The clay climbs up into a cylinder, and spin plus press make a round pot! Round pots come from a steady spin. Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.
A Closer Look
Let's look at a potter's wheel! The wheel head is the spinning plate. The splash pan catches water and clay. And the pedal controls the speed. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Off-center clay wobbles and can fly off. That's why centering comes first. Too much water turns clay to soup, and too little makes cracks. Pots that are fired shrink as water leaves the clay for good. Use wheels and wet floors only with a grown-up, and keep clay dust off faces. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Spin a blob of play dough on a lazy Susan, and press gently, on a table with a grown-up. Did the blob stay rounder than when you squeezed it still? What did the spin add? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.
