Book 29, Question 84 · Video
How do self-watering pots work?
A self-watering pot has a water reservoir at the bottom and a wick or a column of soil that connects it to the plant roots. Water moves upward through the wick by capillary action, the same way a paper towel soaks up spilled water. The plant takes what it needs. This keeps soil evenly damp and saves trips to the tap, especially in summer.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do self-watering pots work?
The Big Idea
Some pots water plants by themselves! It seems like magic. How do self-watering pots work?
A Reservoir
Step one: A Reservoir. A self-watering pot has a water reservoir at the bottom. A wick or a column of soil connects the water to the plant's roots.
Capillary Action
Step two: Capillary Action. Water moves upward through the wick by capillary action. It's the same way a paper towel soaks up spilled water.
Even Watering
Step three: Even Watering. The plant takes only the water it needs. This keeps soil evenly damp and saves trips to the tap, especially in summer.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Holds water. Pulls it up. Stays damp. Drink.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Capillary action also helps water travel up plant stems. Like a paper towel. Water waits below. Fewer trips to the tap.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Add a drop of food coloring to a glass of water. Dip the end of a paper towel strip in. Watch the color climb. Measure how high it goes. How is that like a wick?
Outro
A self-watering pot has a water reservoir at the bottom and a wick that connects it to the roots. Water climbs by capillary action, like a paper towel soaking up a spill, so soil stays evenly damp with fewer trips to the tap. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
