Why are some garden seeds coated in clay or stuck on paper tape?

Video · 1:52 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 29

Tiny seeds, like carrots and lettuce, are hard to space out by hand. Seed companies coat them in a clay-like layer, called pelleting, which makes them bigger, rounder, and easier to hold. Other seeds are glued onto thin paper tape at the right distances apart. You plant the whole strip, and the paper breaks down in the soil. Both tricks save work and mean less thinning later.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some garden seeds coated in clay or stuck on paper tape?

The Big Idea

Some seeds look like little clay balls! Others come stuck on paper tape. Why do gardeners use them?

Tiny Seeds

Step one: Tiny Seeds. Tiny seeds, like carrots and lettuce, are hard to space out by hand. They're so small that they often land in clumps.

Pellets

Step two: Pellets. Seed companies coat them in a clay-like layer, called pelleting. That makes them bigger, rounder, and easier to hold and plant.

Seed Tape

Step three: Seed Tape. Other seeds are glued onto thin paper tape at just the right distance apart. You plant the whole strip, the paper breaks down in the soil, and both tricks mean less thinning later.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Bigger seeds. Pre-spaced. Just right. Less needed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some seed coatings are colored so you can see where you planted them. Pellets are easier to hold. Paper breaks down. Less thinning later.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cut a strip of paper towel. Use dots of flour and water paste. Stick ten radish seeds on, one inch apart. Let it dry, then plant the strip in a pot. Did your seeds sprout in a neat row?

Outro

Tiny seeds like carrots and lettuce are hard to space by hand. Clay pellets make them bigger and easier to hold, and seed tape glues them at the right spacing, so both tricks save work and mean less thinning later. Science is amazing!
