Book 28, Question 23 · Video
How do outfielders know where a fly ball will land?
An outfielder doesn't solve math problems. Instead, they run so the ball appears to rise at a steady rate in their view. If it looks like it's speeding up or slowing down, they speed up or slow down until it looks steady. That path leads them to where it comes down. Practice makes the skill automatic.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do outfielders know where a fly ball will land?
The Big Idea
A fly ball soars high into the sky. The outfielder runs and catches it! How do they know where to go?
No Math
Step one: No Math. An outfielder doesn't solve math problems. Instead, they run so the ball appears to rise at a steady rate in their view.
Adjusting
Step two: Adjusting. If the ball looks like it's speeding up or slowing down, they speed up or slow down until it looks steady. That path leads them to where the ball comes down.
Practice
Step three: Practice. Practice makes the skill automatic. Great outfielders don't even think about it.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Eyes on the ball. Keep it steady. Change speed. Make the catch.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Dogs use a similar trick when catching a flying disc. No math needed. Keep it steady. Practice makes it natural.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Toss a ball high into the air. Try to catch it. Notice how you move your eyes. Notice how your body moves. Try it again a few times!
Outro
Outfielders don't do math to catch fly balls. They run so the ball seems to rise at a steady rate in their view, speeding up or slowing down as needed. That path leads them right to the ball. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
